Shelter FAQs

Do I have to pay for the bed?

No. Clients do not need to pay for accommodations.

Do I get meals for free?

Yes. 3 meals a day plus a night time snack are provided free of charge.

Do I cook my own meals?

No, there is full-time cooking staff that prepares all meals.

Do I have to share a room with other people?

The Shelter has single rooms as well as rooms with 2 beds, so sharing is definitely possible. All rooms will be given as first come, first serve basis upon intake.

How long can I stay?

There is a 30-day guideline. Individuals may stay longer dependant on the circumstances and eligibility.

Do I have to do any mandatory programming?

On Tuesday mornings a House Meeting for all clients gathers everyone to go over house rules and any needed refreshers and updates for the week

On Thursday mornings there is a Hostel Meeting. Clients meet with an Ontario Works representative. This is the case for all clients whether they are collecting Ontario Works or not.

There are optional skills development workshops that guests may attend. The schedule is posted in shelter.

Can I still stay if I have a job?

Absolutely. Clients with employment are required to save monies made for housing and needed items for when they leave.

Do I have a curfew?

No. However, the women’s advocate will ensure that folks are in the facility and using their bed nightly.

Can my children stay with me?

Yes, they can, as long as they are sixteen and under.

Can my husband/spouse stay with me?

Unfortunately men cannot stay within the King Street Shelter, though the Family Shelter can accommodate a family.
