YWCA's Annual Women of Distincition Awards took place on May 6th, 2010. This signature fundraising event celebrated the women and young women, who have distinguished themselves in the community by their personal achievements, commitment and contribution to the advancement of women.

Congratulations to all of the recipients. A special thank you to all of our sponsors and to everyone who joined in celebrating the achievement of Women in Niagara. 2011 call for nominations will be starting in early January. At this time, we are not accepting applications for prospective Niagara residents, but please return to this website in January for more information about how and when the application process will begin.

YWCA's Annual Members Meeting (AMM)

Over 250 YWCA delegates from across Canada gathered under the theme Empower Girls; Change the World in Niagara Falls during the 1st weekend in June. This movement inspired by 155 years of history worldwide defined new strategic directions and celebrated this year’s accomplishments.

The YWCA movement began in London, in 1855, by offering safe, affordable housing and employment training to young women leaving rural areas in search of work. Since the YWCA’s inception, it has been at the forefront of empowering women and girls to lead social, political, economic and civic change. The YWCA remains one of the most vibrant grassroots organizations in the world, one driven by the vision of a fully inclusive world where justice, peace, and freedom are promoted and sustained through women’s leadership.

The theme of this year’s meeting was the empowerment of girls: locally, nationally and internationally, focusing on issues relating to the use of new media, programming, outreach and governance, and featured speakers from across the country and across the globe, including many young women.

“When we  invest in girls we nurture self-respect and self-esteem and that pays off for us all because educated girls grow into educated women who are better able to support their families, make healthy choices, and reinvest in their schools, homes and communities,” says YWCA Canada President Lynne Kent.

The keynote speaker, Jessica Yee, founder and Executive Director of the Native Youth Sexual Health Network spoke about a range of issues including healthy sexuality, reproductive justice, cultural competency and youth empowerment

During one of the sessions, Corinne Rusch-Drutz, Director of Communications and Membership Development, educated the member agencies on the new media YWCA Canada has been developing for the iPhone. The YWCA Safety Siren app for iPhone for young women is a multi-functional siren, which offers Canadian health and safety information about women’s health and wellness, dating and social interaction and links to over 250 resources across Canada.

As a major provider of national programming for girls, YWCA Canada knows from their work on the ground how important it is to be able to engage young women in ways that are innovative and meaningful in order to empower them to create change.

As the largest multi-service women’s organization in the country and a Turning Point for Women™, YWCA Canada has worked for the last 140 years to address issues of violence against women, women’s economic security, child care and women’s empowerment.  With 33 YWCA Member Associations across Canada providing service to 1 million women, girls and their families each year, YWCA acts and advocates on the key issues affecting Canadian women and girls.
